Hi Joanne,
Media psychology is relatively new and draws on work in a number of disciplines. The identification of it as a field is really the result of the amount of communications technology as much as anything. The American Psychological Association has a division for Media Psychology, but when it began, it was really more about psychologists appearing in the media and the presentation of psychological material in the media than about the experience of media technologies. That is changing. The first PhD degree program in media psychology was started at Fielding Graduate University by Dr. Bernard Luskin. While there are a few programs emerging now, Fielding's program is unique in that it really is about media psychology and integrates a solid theoretical grounding in psychology with the practice of media development, production and use across a wide range of fields. Fielding now also has a master's program in media psychology where I am a faculty member.
